Andy Ripley

We have decided to make the East Grinstead 10K The Andy Ripley Memorial Race. Andy was a keen supporter of East Grinstead Athletic Club and often presented the prizes at club events. He was an inspirational figure and truly fitted the description larger than life.

Andy Ripley won 24 rugby union caps for England between 1972 and 1976, and scored two tries. After his international career had finished, he still found time to reach the semi-finals of the 400m in the AAA championships and win BBCs Superstars, while still playing rugby for Rosslyn Park. He also competed in triathlons and became the world indoor veterans' rowing champion.

In 2005 Andy was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He remained characteristically good-humoured and became an ambassador for the Prostate Cancer Charity. He was appointed OBE in the 2010 birthday honours list, but sadly he died shortly after the announcement, aged 62.

If you wish to run to raise money for a charity, please support the charity Prostate Cancer UK.Prostate Cancer UK is a registered charity in England and Wales (1005541) and in Scotland (SC039332). Registered company 2653887.
